Orange UK shifted over 30,000 iPhones is its first day of trade, setting new sales records for the carrier.

Rival operator O2, which previously had the exclusive iPhone distribution in the UK, has yet to reveal how many iPhones it shipped on the first day of sales, which was just over two years ago, but has told local press that it was “considerably more” than Orange’s tally.

“Orange are delighted to reveal, that as of 4pm yesterday, it had sold more than 30,000 iPhones across the UK – smashing what we believe is the previously published first-day sales record for a handset in the UK,” said a spokesman.

The carrier said that its first app for the iPhone, a cinema ticket offer, had hit number one in the App Store entertainment category.

Orange also claims to have registered around 250,000 iPhone pre-subscriptions, of which only a fraction have been fulfilled. If those figures are correct Orange may end up with 1 million iPhone users by the end of 2010.
