Australia's Optus Business has teamed up with Cisco to build the smart network which will be used to connect next month's Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games to the world.
The two companies will build a high-speed network spanning the 37 locations for the games, backed by a standalone, carrier grade network using 426km of Optus fiber.
Cisco is meanwhile providing infrastructure for the integrated communications solution. The company also conducted a detailed audit of the network design to ensure the resilience of the equipment, licensing and architecture.
Optus won the contract with the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (GOLDOC) in a competitive tender process.
Optus will provide access to free Wi-Fi services for 6,600 athletes throughout the Games Village, and has installed access points in the locations expected to be most used by athletes.
International and local TV networks will meanwhile use Optus' infrastructure to upload and share footage and support video streaming.
Optus and Cisco have also selected key technical experts to manage the technology at the Optus Gold Coast Delivery Hub.
“The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will demonstrate what Optus has to offer – including our ability to design, build and operate the leading technology supporting an event on the global stage,” Optus Business managing director John Paitaridis said.
“We are proud that the GOLDOC has entrusted Optus to deliver and manage the technology that will deliver the GC2018 to a world-wide audience.”
The 2018 Commonwealth Games will run from April 4 to April 15.
