The UAE's Ooredoo has teamed up with Jamaica-based Digicel for its ambitious mobile network rollout in Myanmar.

Digicel Asian Holdings, a consortium consisting of Digicel and Myanmar-based YSH Finance, announced it has signed an agreement with Ooredoo Myanmar to deploy and lease telecom towers in the market.

The construction will be conducted through Digicel Asian Holdings' Myanmar company, Myanmar Tower Company.

The subsidiary will construct multi-tenancy towers to allow other telecom operators to take advantage of the infrastructure.

“We are delighted to work with Ooredoo to help develop a high quality telecommunications network across the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, contribute to the growth of the Myanmar economy and benefit Myanmar citizens across all of the country's States, Regions and Union territories,” Digicel chairman Denis O'Brien said.

Digicel Group has operations in 31 markets in the Caribbean, APAC and Central America. The company was one of the 12 shortlisted bidders during this year's Myamar telecom license allocation.

Ooredoo and Norway's Telenor ended up winning the tender, and both companies have committed to roll out mobile networks covering around 80% of the population within five years.

YSH Finance is part of Myanmar conglomerate SPA Myanmar Group.
