Qatar's Ooredoo plans to launch its 3G network in Myanmar in the third calendar quarter, and has announced an intention to share telecom infrastructure with fellow nationwide license holder Telenor.
Ooredoo CEO Dr Nasser Marifih toldArabian Business that the mobile rollout is underway and the company is on track for a Q3 launch.
He said the company is in talks with Telenor to hammer out a sharing deal, with the aim of sharing as much as possible – including transmission, towers and even power.
Marifih added that Ooredoo aims to capture a mobile market share of 30-50% in the underdeveloped telecom market within a year or two of launch.
Ooredoo and Telenor were awarded their telecom licenses late last month, months after the companies won an intensely competitive tender process for the permits.
Ooredoo has committed to achieving nationwide population coverage of 84% for both its voice and data services within five years of receiving its license. The company has pledged to invest $15 billion in Myanmar.
In other Myanmar telecom news, Thailand's True Corp has revealed it is in talks with Myanmar ISP Yatanarpon Teleport (YTP) over setting up a mobile joint venture.
