NTT Communications's upcoming Hong Kong data center expansion will use an innovative cooling system design capable of improving energy efficiency by 20% over traditional cooling systems.

The tier-4 ready Financial Data Center Tower 2 (FDC2) facility will launch in December, adding an additional 4,000 racks of server space to the Financial Data Center facility.

FDC2 will be the first in the city to use a front-flow cooling system based on a custom air handling and fay array system developed by NTT Com in partnership with Emerson Network Power.

The facility will also use a water-side free cooling system to bypass the chiller system when conditions allow to improve chiller plant efficiency.

Lighting will be provided by ultra-low voltage LED light systems, complete with motion and temperature functions to allow lighting to be adjusted automatically to save costs while enhancing security and safety.

NTT Com Asia executive vice president for cloud Taylor Man commented that power consumption accounts for a major operating expense for data centers today.

“We have recognized that enhancing energy efficiency would be a top priority when we incorporate a high density design within the soon-to-be launched FDC2,” he said.

“We are confident that our new front-flowing cooling system (AHU) will change the way data centers are designed, and help our clients drive business performance by optimizing costs in the long term.”
