NTT Communications this morning took the wraps off its latest network upgrade. The international arm of the Japanese giant NTT has launched its SD-WAN portfolio globally. And by globally, they do mean globally with coverage spanning 190+ countries.

Underlying the SD-WAN services is the deployment of a 'global 100% software defined network' which the company says is the world's first. The architecture includes more than 75 local cloud centers around the world and is built off of the technology acquired with the Virtela purchase three years ago. The SD-WAN capabilities are thus an overlay service upon a core they have been working on for some time.

The SD-WAN service portfolio includes flexible connectivity via a wide range of technologies and local partners, real time streaming network analytics, flexible CPE options, QoS at the branch office level, and of course the necessary security and acceleration options.

As for customers, one of the early adopters is Michigan-based Inteva Products, a global supplier for the automotive industry with 50 locations on five continents. Multinational corporations of all stripes have been clamoring for SD-WAN for a while now, looking to replace legacy options with more dynamic and configurable capabilities derived from the rise of SDN technologies.

NTT's launch puts them in a good position to gain marketshare, but of course they aren't the only ones racing to meet that demand. The announcements of progress in SD-WAN service roll-outs globally will likely continue to arrive in a steady stream over the next few quarters.
