NTT Com to extend ASE cable to Cambodia

NTT Communications has announced plans to extend the ASE subsea cable to Cambodia, under partnership with local ISP Chuan Wei (Cambodia).

The connection will be Cambodia's first subsea optical cable. It will provide a high-capacity link between Cambodia and other major Asian locations, and allow NTT Com to provide higher-quality internet services to local customers.

Along with the Cambodian extension, NTT Com said it is also expanding its number of ASE connection points in Southeast Asia and opening more Nexcenter global data centers in the region.

The 7,800km ASE (Asia Submarine-cable Express) cable currently has landing centers in Japan, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. It is operated by a consortium consisting of NTT Com, Telekom Malaysia, PLDT and StarHub.

The cable's route avoids the Bashi Channel and the south coast of Taiwan, because these areas frequently experience earthquakes and typhoons that can damage subsea infrastructure.

The ASE launched in mid 2012, and construction of the existing route was completed in early 2013.
