Telenor subsidiary Unitech Wireless has chosen Nokia Siemens as the exclusive supplier for its pan-India GPRS core network.

Unitech Wireless has also contracted the vendor to manage the day-to-day operations of the network - which will operate under the brand Uninor - for the next three years.

The operator has a license to offer telecom services in each of India's 22 circles, and has received spectrum for all but one of these circles. The operator plans to launch its network in selected areas by the end of 2009.

Meanwhile, NSN has signed up to ITU’s Connecting Villages program to bring telecom services to unwired communities around the world.

NSN is donating its services to the project. In the first stage, isolated villages in island countries of the Pacific region will be connected.

The rollouts will use NSN's Village Connection platform, which local communities can use to provide phone services for as little as $2 per month, the company said.
