Nokia Siemens and a cadre of research departments have jointly developed a new approach to 100GE networks that promises to slash the equipment needed to operate them.

In an R&D project funded by an EU grant, the parties have jointly developed and trialed a short-haul transceiver known as the HECTO (high-speed electro-optical components for integrated transmitter and receiver in optical communications).

HECTO can cut the number of optical transceivers required for a 100GE network by 75%, NSN said. Using HECTO data can be short-hauled using only one transceiver on a single wavelength, compared to four transceivers on four separate wavelengths.

Field trials of HECTO have been successful, NSN said. Organizations from Denmark, Germany, Greece and Sweden were involved in the project.
