Nokia has announced its new WaveSuite portfolio of open software applications for optical networks, aimed at helping operators better monetize their networks.

The portfolio also includes applications aimed at speeding up the deployment of new service and allowing operators to rapidly optimize their network to improve performance and capacity.

Nokia said the tools are designed to fulfil the promise of investments in agile, programmable infrastructure by stimulating adoption of SDN control software and open programming interfaces.

The WaveSuite tools give operators, wholesalers and large enterprises the ability to virtualize their optical networking infrastructure, enabling network-as-a-service business models which can be used to support new channels to market.

"Nokia is transforming the way transport services are consumed and monitored,” ACG Research principal analyst for intelligent networking Tim Doiron said.

“Nokia's hierarchical, multi-tenant business logic and application software are right on point to radically reduce service delivery times, strengthen distribution channel partnerships and enable enterprise customers to easily consume and monitor transport services on demand."
