Nokia has been compelled to recall and replace millions of mobile phone chargers developed by a Chinese subcontractor, after testing discovered that they are potentially dangerous.
In the latest bad news for the handset maker, a routine quality control testing process has determined that certain chargers developed by Chinese manufacturer BYD pose an electrical shock hazard.
The covers of the chargers could come loose, exposing the charger's electrical components, Nokia said, adding that no injuries have yet been reported as a result of the components.
Only AC-3E and AC-3U models manufactured between June 15 and August 9, and AC-4U models manufactured between April 13 and October 25 have been identified as potentially unsafe. These are the only products covered by the free exchange program.
Up to 14 million chargers will be recalled, mostly from customers in the US and Europe, AFP reported.
Nokia said the exchange program has been arranged for every country where the affected chargers have been sold, and will take place at a country level. BYD will cover the cost of the replacements.
BYD is a Shenzhen-based battery and electric car-maker, 10% owned by Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway. Chief Wang Chuanfu has topped this year’s Forbes China rich lists.
