Taiwan's operators have always been coy about discussing LTE. Now we know why.
Wimax will be the only choice in the market for seven years, according to NCC commissioner Chin-nan Hsien.
Hsien says the regulator plans to issue spectrum for LTE at 700-MHz, but that it will take three years to reclaim the frequencies from the military and police. It will take a further two years to conclude the licensing process and another two years after that before LTE can commercially begin.
The Taiwan government is, of course, a strong supporter of Wimax, which is backed by several local vendors so the slow crawl to LTE comes as no surprise.
