Best SDP Provider of the Year: Hewlett Packard

Operators today are at a critical turning point. Subscribers are demanding innovative applications and services. Much of that demand is now being met by the popular app stores, so CSP's control of the user experience is being diluted, says Rick Halton, VP of marketing for HP Communications and Media Solutions.

"Clearly, CSPs must change course. They must develop new business models and leverage creative third parties to bring new innovative services and apps to market. In short, they need to re-assert their place in the fast-changing wireless value chain," he said.

Halton said HP's SDP gives operators the opportunity to enter the value chain between the over-the-top providers and end-users and significantly improve the end-customer experience.

The HP SDP enables CSPs to invite end-users to explore new applications by viewing, searching, purchasing and downloading them from multiple app stores. He said its SDP helps CSPs to attract creative developers such as trusted third parties, SMB market developers and the Web 2.0 developer community; gives them simplified (but secure) access to all the network resources; and ultimately, enables them to produce the cool apps that can win customer loyalty.

In addition to accelerating service creation, "our SDP allows CSPs to expose and sell network and IT capabilities like usage behavior, location, presence, subscriber profile data and charging to third parties."

He expects 2011 to be a year for intense transformation for most CSPs.

"We expect CSPs will move beyond operational transformation and re-think their core business models, looking for entirely new ways to generate revenue."
