Google, Nokia, Skype, Yahoo and eBay yesterday launched the Asia Internet Coalition, an industry body that aims to foster an open internet.

The Coalition, incorporated in Hong Kong last year, will press Asia-Pacific countries to formulate favorable internet policies.

“The AIC strongly believes that an open internet will benefit entire economies, societies and citizens, and is committed to this goal,” the group said in a statement.

The Coalition's website shows it has already submitted comments on proposed amendments to data privacy laws in the Philippines and copyright acts in Malaysia and the Philippines.

Yesterday's launch was presided over by Hong Kong government CIO Stephen Mak.
