NEC has re-entered the Thai smartphone market with its waterproof Medias 101S. The vendor has set a target of achieving 5% market share within the next three years.
The phone itself is a middle-of-the-road Android 2.3 phone but is one of the few waterproof phones available on the market. Four more models will follow later this year.
Yoichiro Minami Associate Senior VP of NEC-Casio Mobile Communications, hoped the phone would prove a hit especially with the water festival at new year coming up and Thailand’s long rainy seasons.
Another key market would be the 50,000 Japanese expatriates working in Thailand and their families due to its Japanese language support.
Minami expect smart phone sales to make up 30% of NEC’s Thailand revenues within three years, currently dominated by IT and telecom solutions.
