Myanmar's newest mobile operator MyTel has already invested $1 billion in its nationwide operations, and plans to invest $2 billion within its 15-year license period.

The operator, a joint venture between Vietnam's Viettel, government-led Star High Public Company and a group of local technology companies, has deployed more than 5,000 base stations since securing Myanmar's fourth nationwide telecoms license last year, the Myanmar Timesreported.

MyTel's rollout has also included 30,000km of fiber backhaul and the establishment of 50 MyTel shops and 50,000 reseller shops to distribute SIMs.

The operator's deployment has given it a 2G and 4G population coverage of around 70% and over 1 million subscribers.

The operator has also announced plans to spend $80 million to provide free internet services to over 3,000 schools nationwide as part of its corporate social responsibility program.

MyTel plans to invest $2 billion within its two year license program. The company has acknowledged that it will need more base stations to meet 4G demand.
