Myanmar's Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC) has expanded its relationship with satellite operator Intelsat to accelerate the development of the nation's wireless infrastructure.
The ministry has arranged to utilize services on the upcoming Intelsat 39, a Ku- and C-band satellite due to replace the Intelsat 902 next year.
The multi-year, multi-transponder agreement will see Intelsat 39 host services across both bands for Myanmarsat-2.
The government will be able to use the deployment to enhance its own mobile network deployments as they expand to more remote areas, as well as the networks of mobile operators and media companies.
The deployment will also support the ministry's goal of ensuring that 95% of Myanmar's population has access to broadband connectivity by 2022, and will be used to provide e-banking and government services to communities.
“By expanding our relationship with Intelsat, the power and efficiencies generated by Intelsat’s Globalized Network fortifies our network infrastructure, expands broadband connectivity outside of Myanmar’s urban centers and enhances the educational, health, media and government services provided to the people of Myanmar,” ministry of transport and communications permanent secretary U Chit Wai said.
“Our partnership with Intelsat ensures that businesses will have access to fast, sustainable, high-quality broadband connectivity to support expansion of the media, energy and banking sectors and spur further economic development across the country.”
