China Mobile and Shanghai GM have joined force to bring an embedded 4G/LTE telematics service to the automaker’s vehicles in China, the companies announced at the Mobile World Congress this week.

Under the partnership, Shanghai OnStar, a joint venture of Shanghai General Motors, will add the 4G/LTE capabilities to its OnStar telematics services.

The OnStar 4G telematics service, based on China Mobile's TD-LTE, will also include in-vehicle Wi-Fi hot spots, and a range of new infotainment offerings, such as streaming video for back-seat passengers, and faster application downloads.

The TD-LTE telematics service will also significantly improve vehicle remote diagnostics speed and allow over-the-air software updates, Shanghai GM said in a statement.

The move will make Shanghai GM the first automaker to offer an embedded 4G LTE telematics service in China, the company added.

Shanghai GM plans to initially will introduce the OnStar 4G LTE telematics in a Cadillac model this year and eventually make the service standard across the portfolios of its Cadillac, Buick and Chevrolet brands.
