NSN has announced it has conducted the world's first demonstrations of TDD-FDD carrier aggregation (CA).

The vendor teamed up with KT and SK Telecom to conduct separate trials involving aggregating both TD-LTE and FDD LTE spectrum.

According to NSN, one advantage of FDD-TDD CA is that high-frequency TDD bands - which can be great for downloads but have limited coverage areas and uplink speeds - for downlink only. Low-frequency FDD bands can be used for both uplink and downlink.

This could potentially allow operators to improve their high-band TD-LTE coverage by 50-100%.

NSN vice president of TD-LTE Qi Zhang said the company is “actively pursuing the 3GPP standardization” of TDD-FDD CA.

South Korean operators have been at the forefront of LTE-Advanced and related developments. In January, SK Telecom conducted the first demonstration of tri-band carrier aggregation technology. The same month, KT launched the first eMBMS-based LTE-Broadcast service.
