Myanmar's MPT aims to cover 95% of the population with its 3G network by the end of March.

The state-owned operator and overseas partners KDDI and Sumitomo are implementing the 900-MHz in existing towers in addition to the 2.1-GHz band already used.

The company said that with the upgrade, the company aims to increase service coverage from 60% to over 90% of the population by early into this month and 95% by the end of March.

In order to promote the expansion, MPT is offering bonus credit for pre-paid customers whenever they top up between last Friday and February 9, and for post-paid users that use over 1,000 kyats ($0.76) worth of combined calls, SMS and data over the same period.

“At MPT it is of the utmost importance to us that we provide the best service possible to our valued users,” MPT-KGSM chief commercial officer Koichi Kawase said.

“With 95% of the Myanmar population covered by March, there is no doubt that MPT strengthens its leadership with over 18 million users and the largest 3G network in the country,” he added.

KGSM is the joint venture between Japan's KDDI and Sumitomo established to serve as the foreign partner for the collaboration with MPT to roll out nationwide mobile services.

MPT entered the partnership to allow it to better compete against Telenor Myanmar and Ooredoo Myanmar in the recently-liberalized mobile market.
