Motorola working on new Nexus phone

Motorola has confirmed that it is working with Google on a new Google-branded smartphone, which will effectively be the Nexus Two.

Co-CEO Sanjay Jha last week laid out the company's ambition to launch 20 smartphones in 2010, including “one direct-to-consumer device with Google,” The Streetsaid.

But he did not comment on rumors that the device currently codenamed Shadow is to be the Nexus Two.

Google hinted at a partnership with Motorola while outlining its plans for the Nexus range last month.

HTC designed the Nexus One, which launched last month. Google is selling the device both directly through a web-based sales channel, and through carrier partnerships. The Nexus Two will likely be sold the same way.

Sales of Motorola's Android-powered Droid were a rare bright spot in an overall somber Q4 for the mobile devices unit, which reported a 22% year-on-year fall in operating profit.

The Motorola group recorded a net profit of $142 million on sales of $5.7 billion. Analysts had been predicting revenue of $5.9 billion.
