Alcatel-Lucent's Motive division has unveiled a virtualized security system for detecting and containing malware that degrades network, device and M2M performance.

The Motive Security Guardian is designed to protect operator networks, M2M communications and mobile devices.

It is set up to allow operators to warn subscribers immediately when malware is found on a device and give step-by-step instructions on how to remove the threat.

The system uses Motive Security Labs' library of malware samples to detect threats. Motive boasts that the library currently contains over 30 million active samples, with 120,000 new samples processed per day.

It can be managed via an NFV platform and scaled up or down to meet market demand.

“Motive research shows that 65 percent of subscribers expect their service provider to protect their devices,” Alcatel-Lucent general manager of network intelligence Patrick Tan said.

“As customer experience becomes the new frontier for competitive differentiation, operators can leverage this trusted security service role to provide always-on and up-to date protection of their subscribers’ devices.”

Alcatel-Lucent said the system can help significantly reduce calls to care agents triggered by malware, such as complaints about bill shock, unwanted pop-ups or pirated data usage.
