Metro Insight: All eyes back on the metro

When it comes to the metro, operators have been more focused on edge routers and Carrier Ethernet than their optical layers. But that's changing. Priorities are shifting dramatically in favor of bringing packet-optical architectures deeper into the metro to the point that the distinction between “metro” and “regional” is becoming increasingly fuzzy.

That blurring of boundaries is a common thread in this e-guide, which kicks off with an overview of why operators are refocusing on the metro, and how it’s primed for a major transformation via packet-optical innovations (with a little help from SDN and NFV).

Much of that blurring of boundaries is being driven by the growing importance of data centers – and the fact that more of them are being built well outside of the usual urban centers, which is fundamentally changing network demands. Ovum analyst Ian Redpath explores the latest data center trends, how they’re impacting connectivity requirements, and the opportunities this creates for service providers.

Anthony McLachlan, Ciena’s VP & GM Asia Pacific, gets into the specifics of these metro trends and how telcos can leverage coherent optics, SDV and NFV to reduce their end-to-end costs as they shift their focus to cloud services.

And finally, we bring it back to that blurring of boundaries between metro and regional networks, as Ciena explains how enterprise DCs are becoming increasingly regionalized, and draws an evolutionary roadmap for CSPs to follow to not only mitigate complexities and optimize costs, but also build a foundation for new variable-bandwidth services.
