Malaysian wireless carrier Maxis is planning to spend between $110 million and $165 million on capital expenditure for its 3G network next year.

In a statement, Maxis CEO Datuk Jamaludin Ibrahim said the investment would be used primarily for expanding Maxis' 3G network coverage.

At the end of June, the company had about 110,000 3G subscribers, said Jamaludin, adding that some 40,000 new subscribers signed up in June, driven primarily by services offered around the football World Cup.

He said Maxis would take a few more years before it could provide nationwide 3G coverage in the face of competition from new 3G license holders.

"Coverage in Klang Valley will be increased to 100% by year-end from 80% now," he added.

Reports said Maxis ended the first quarter with 8.2 million customers, or a 42.5% market share in the Malaysian market.
