Singapore's M1 has reported a 1.8% increase in first-quarter net profit to S$41 million ($33.2 million), attributing the growth to mobile and fixed broadband gains.

The operator said its service revenue for the quarter grew 4.2% year-on-year to S$200 million.

The company's mobile customer base reached just over 2 million by the end of March, of which around 1.1 million are post-paid customers and 223,000 were 4G customers.

Smartphones now account for 77% of M1's postpaid mobile customers, and non-voice revenue makes up 39.5% of total service revenue.

But mobile postpaid monthly ARPU, offset against handset subsidies, fell 1.7% to S$52.80.

M1 also added 8,000 fiber customers during the quarter, bringing its total base to 60,000. Total revenue from fixed services increased to S$48 million from S$38 million. Fiber monthly ARPU declined 1.8% to S$50.80.

The operator announced that barring unforeseen circumstances, it expects “moderate” net profit growth for 2013.

“The faster 4G network and devices will continue to drive data usage,” M1 CEO Karen Kooi said. “The extension of 4G service to the prepaid segment and the availability of lower-cost 4G devices are likely to spur take-up [further].”
