Singapore's M1 is taking a new approach to data roaming, launching a new bundle allowing customers to use their existing data bundles in six foreign countries for a monthly fee.
The operator's new Data Passport service will let customers use their data bundles while roaming in Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and the US.
The value-added service costs an additional S$10 ($7.35) per country. Customers exceeding their data bundles will pay data usage rates of S$10.70 per GB – still well below prevailing data roaming rates – and excess charges will be capped at S$188.32 per month.
M1 also introduced a new network lock feature to ensure customers are roaming on an M1 preferred market in the destination where M1 is offering S$15 a day unlimited data roaming, but only on partner networks.
Customers will be able to make and receive voice calls or messages but data will be disabled while the lock is active.
M1 separately recently announced that it has entered an agreement for Liberty Wireless to use M1's network as an MVNO offering voice, messaging and data access.
Through the deal, Liberty Wireless aims to become Singapore's first MVNO offering voice, messagig and data services to postpaid customers. M1 also currently hosts two prepaid MVNOs.
