Singapore's M1 is ramping up its content ambitions with the launch of Android-based internet TV service MiBox.

The company is offering MiBox as a bundled package including an Android set-top box and free TV content.

Subscribers will be able to access 1,800 video-on-demand titles, 116 TV channels, 1,200 e-books and 370 apps.

The service will be available for S$8 ($6.33) per month for M1 fiber customers and $12 a month for non-customers. For an additional S$5 a month, a library of 300 Android games will also be offered.

M1 started taking subscriptions from Saturday, and is waiving the subscription fees for 12 months for the first 10,000 customers to sign up.

M1 chief marketing officer P Subramaniam said the service is designed to reflect changing media consumption habits, which are “shifting towards an on-demand, a-la-carte model.”

Informa Telecoms and Media analysts watching the Asian IPTV market have concluded that operators looking to take on established pay TV providers in markets such as Singapore need to be able to deliver a service comparable to - or better than – the incumbents.
