Japan's KDDI will spend 11 billion yen ($139 million) to build a new data center in Beijing, and expand its existing Hong Kong facility.

The operator revealed that its new Beijing facility will span 25,000 square meters and be positioned as a carrier-neutral data center for the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone.

It will be operated by Telehouse Beijing, a joint venture between KDDI and internet and data center provider Beijing Sinnet Technology.

The facility will provide colocation services, as well as optional customer equipment monitoring and outsourcing services.

The new facility will bring the number of data centers KDDI operates in the Greater China area to five. As well as Hong Kong and Beijing, the company has a presence in Shanghai.

The operator meanwhile plans to increase the floor space of its Hong Kong facility to 20,000 square meters, and claims that after this upgrade it will be the largest facility in the city-state.

Explaining the expansion plan, KDDI said Greater China is “the key market driving the overall Asian economy.”

Earlier this month, KDDI revealed it had deployed intelligent Self Organizing Networks (iSON) technology from Nokia Siemens for its Japanese LTE network.
