KDDI's net rise, the number of fresh subscription contracts minus that of cancellations, came to 148,700, allowing it to outdo NTT DoCoMO, which posted a 133,800 net rise, the Telecommunications Carriers Association said.

Among mobile phone service brands, KDDI's 'au' service posted a net increase of 260,800, but its Tu-Ka service registered a net fall of 112,100, the association said.

Vodafone K.K, which was acquired by Softbank in April from Britain's Vodafone Group, managed to post a net increase of 1,100, it said.

Softbank plans to rename Vodafone K.K. as Softbank Mobile in October to offer its mobile phone service under the Softbank brand.

Wilcom meanwhile posted a net increase of 49,300 for its personal handy-phone system service.
