Despite launching less than a year ago, India's Reliance Jio Infocomm has already grown to capture a 41.01% share of India's overall wired and wireless broadband market, according to the latest figures [PDF] from Regulator Trai.
Jio's status as a 4G-only operator has helped the operator rapidly gain share in the overall broadband market. Its closest rival, Bharti Airtel, has a share of 18.4%, compared to 13.67% for Vodafone and 8.76% of Idea Cellular.
In the wired broadband market, Airtel is on top with 2.1 million users, Atria Convergence Technologies has 1.22 million and state-owned operator MTNL has just under a million users.
Total broadband subscribers reached 300.84 million, compared to a total telephony subscriber base of 1.21 billion – up from 1.2 billion at the end of May.
Jio has meanwhile managed to capture 10% of India's total telecoms subscriber base in less than a year, but its disruptive pricing strategy of heavy discounting has threatened the profitability of the entire market and triggered a wave of consolidation.
India's overall wireless teledensity has grown to 92.12% as of the end of June, the statistics show.
