(Associated Press via NewsEdge) Japan will launch an engineering test satellite aboard its domestically developed H2-A rocket in December, the nation's space agency announced.

The satellite will be used for telecommunications and to conduct sensitive measurements of time, calibrating a high-precision clock on board with the ground, JAXA said in a statement. The H2-A will be the 11th Japan has launched. It is to be launched on Dec. 16, with a window allowing for delays through Feb. 28.

The launch would be the first of an H2-A since Japan launched its third intelligence-gathering satellite in September. The rocket is the workhorse of Japan's space program.
