Apple's new iPhone models may have left tech sector pundits underwhelmed, but the vendor still set a new launch weekend record, selling 9 million iPhone 5S and 5C models in two days.

In a press release, Apple also claimed to have set a record for the fastest software upgrade with its new iOS 7, with more than 200 million devices now using the new operating system.

The sales compare to 5 million devices sold during the iPhone 5 launch. But sales this time around are for two devices instead of one, and for the first time include an opening weekend debut in China and Japan.

Apple did not break down the sales by market, or even between the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. But CEO Tim Cook did reveal that the iPhone 5S had sold out of its initial supply – suggesting that the iPhone 5C did not.

While Apple has insisted that the objective of the iPhone 5C was not to create a budget version of the iPhone, analysts have been critical of the company's pricing strategy, suggesting the company hasn't gone far enough to address competition from mid-range and low-cost Android smartphones.
