After weeks of rumors, it’s official: the iPhone 4S is coming to mainland China on January 13, Apple announced Wednesday.

Media speculation has been sizzling over when the latest version of the iPhone would be approved for sale in China. Just this week, China Tech News claimed China Unicom would start selling the iPhone 4S as early as January 6, although Unicom would only say that the 4S would be available before the start of the Lunar New Year holiday on January 22.

“Customer response to our products in China has been off the charts,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a statement.

In addition to China, the iPhone 4S will also be launched in 21 other markets the same day, including Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Cameroon, Cayman Islands, Central African Republic, China, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Guam, Guinea Conakry, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Niger, Senegal, St. Vincent and The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos and Uganda.

“With the launch in China next week, iPhone 4S will be available in over 90 countries making this our fastest iPhone rollout ever,” Cook said.
