The Wi-Fi only version of Apple’s new internet tablet, the iPad, will go on sale in the US on April 3, the company has announced.

Devices with Wi-Fi plus 3G will hit the stores in late April.

Both models will be sold in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK from late April. The device will ship in other countries “later this year,” Apple said.

Earlier reports said a bottleneck in Apple’s supply chain would delay early shipments of the device, Apple’s most eagerly-awaited since it launched the iPhone in 2007.

The iPad is 0.5 inches (1.27cm) thick and weighs 1.5 pounds (680 grams), making it lighter than a netbook, and has up to ten hours of battery life.

The Wi-Fi model will sell in the US at prices of $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, $699 for 64GB. The Wi-Fi + 3G devices will be priced at $629 for 16GB, $729 for 32GB and $829 for 64GB.

It has access to the 150,000 apps in Apple’s App Store, including 12 new applications designed especially for iPad, notably an iBooks app.
