Satellite operator Inmarsat has joined the LoRa Alliance, which is dedicated to developing a global IoT standard based on low-power wide area networks (LP-WAN).

Inmarsat will provide the LoRa ecosystem with satellite connectivity using its fleet to enable the deployment of IoT solutions in any areas.

The LoRa Alliance aims to standardize LP-WAN for IoT, M2M, smart city and industrial applications. Members of the alliance aim to guarantee interoperability between operators via the open global standard LoRaWAN.

Members include, multinational operators, vendors, system integrators, sensor manufacturers and start-ups. India's Tata Communications is using the standard to build what it expects will be the world's largest IoT network.

“Joining the LoRa Alliance is a natural fit for Inmarsat,” Inmarsat president for enterprise Greg Ewert said.

“Our portfolio of M2M services, powered by our global network, have long been used to extend the reach of our customers’ M2M networks in a number of vertical markets, powering the Internet of Everywhere for solutions worldwide. We hope that our expertise will be a valuable addition to the LoRa Alliance, and we are pleased to champion a global standard for IoT connectivity.”
