Indonesia's PT Indosat and Facebook have launched the Internet.org free web browsing initiative in the Indonesian market.

Internet.org, Facebook's initiative to bring access to the internet to underserved populations, offers free browsing to a set of basic services including health, education, social media and news sites.

The service covers access to websites including Wikipedia, Accuweather, Jobstreet, auction sites OLX and Tokopedia and Unnicef's Facts For Life.

Indosat will offer the service at no charge for its IM3 and Mentari prepaid customers, as well as its Matrix postpaid subscribers.

The operator has launched an Internet.org mobile app on the Android Play store, and is offering the service in both English and Bahahsa Indonesia.

“We are delighted to be the first to work with Facebook to launch this service in Indonesia,” commented Dr Nasser Marafih, group CEO of Indosat parent Ooredoo.

“This partnership will contribute to bringing more of Indonesia’s communities online and help people to achieve their aspirations for a better tomorrow.”

Internet.org is also available in India, Colombia, Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, and Zambia. The service launched in the Philippines last month via a partnership with Smart.
