Indian ISP Spectranet plans to shake up the local broadband market by introducing unlimited 100Mbps broadband services in certain urban centers for just 1,200 rupees ($18) per month.
The company plans to introduce the service for all its customers within a year, CEO Udit Mehrotra told the Press Trust of India.
Currently Indian fixed-line providers typically offer prices of around 3,000 rupees per month for 40-50Mbps services with data caps of up to 300GB. Spectranet's planned rollout will stimulate further competition in the market.
Spectranet plans to roll out the services in stages over the course of the year, and has already commenced a three-month trial involving providing 100Mbps broadband services for 1,199 rupees in the Gurgaon region.
The ISP currently operates in Gurgaon, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, Noida and Ghaziabad.
Spectranet has around 50,000 consumer and 4,000 corporate customers in these markets. The company aims to expand its presence to cover 25-30% of homes in all the cities within its footprint within 4-5 years, up from 4-5% today.
