(The Statesman via NewsEdge) India's Department of Telecommunication (DoT) granted British Telecom (BT) a license for national and international long distance calls.

BT, which now has long distance license in over 170 countries, will initially target India's corporate sector, before eventually focusing on the domestic market.

The company, which has recently formed a joint venture company, BT Telecom India, will offer its NLD and ILD services to multi-site corporate customers.

The company has plans to provide services to corporate customers who have sites in India with VPN services using technology such as Internet protocol-based multi-protocol label switching and ATM.

"This is fantastic news, allowing BT to establish and manage our own operations in India," Andy Green, CEO, BT Global Services, in a press statement, said.
