Australian service provider iiNet has enhanced its network backbone with Juniper Networks and has started trials of Juniper's 100GbE interface cards. iiNet also migrated its backbone to Juniper Networks T1600 Core Routers. Juniper’s 100GbE interface cards in are the first 100GbE deployment in the Asia Pacific market.

The Australian ISP market is entering a new era with the initial roll-out of the government-owned National Broadband Network (NBN), a multi-billion project aimed at making Gbps Internet access, via fiber-to-the-premises connections, available to 93 percent of the population.

While, in the long term, this will eliminate the need for broadband ISPs to provide the “last mile” connection to customers, it places a much greater burden on their backbone networks.

iiNet currently delivers broadband, telephony and IPTV services across its fixed network infrastructure, with more than 1.3 million customer service agreements in place. NBN access will enable iiNet to deliver richer and more bandwidth-intensive service offerings in an open, nation-wide marketplace.

Juniper Networks T1600 routing platform delivers up to 1.6 Tbps of capacity with the ability to forward up to 1.92 billion packets per second – and up to 16 T1600 chassis can be matrixed into a single routing entity with a sustainable throughput rate of up to 25 Tbps/30.7 billion pps – giving iiNet tremendous scope and flexibility to scale its backbone.
