Hong Kong's Genius Brand joint venture has selected Huawei to help it build out its planned LTE network.

Genius, a joint venture between Hutchison Telecom Hong Kong Holdings and PCCW subsidiary Hong Kong Telecom, paid HK498 million ($63.9 million) for 30MHz of LTE spectrum in 2009.

The joint venture trialled LTE in mid-2010, and had awarded a preliminary rollout deal to Huawei earlier in the year.

The new deal is for a turnkey installation of equipment including base stations, Huawei revealed yesterday.

Genius faces competition to the network even before it goes live, with rival CSL soft-launching its own LTE network last month.

Telstra-owned CSL also acquired spectrum in 2009's LTE auction - paying HK$525 million for the privilege – as did China Mobile Hong Kong, which paid HK$519 million.

Huawei last month announced it had won a five-year, S$280 million ($227.6 million) LTE deal with M1. The Singaporean operator is aiming for a nationwide LTE deployment by Q1 next year.
