(The Statesman via NewsEdge) India has sought information from major cellular operator Hutchison-Essar that under what license the company had offered its push-to-talk service, which was stopped after objections were raised in early 2005.

India's Department of Telecommunications (DOT) said it sent a letter to the carrier asking it to "clarify" under what license the push-to-talk service was offered.

Hutch officials confirmed the letter of inquiry and that Hutch has sent information being sought by the department.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued a decision saying that Hutch's push-to-talk services were in violation of its license and had recommended to the government that an appropriate action be taken against Hutch.
