Huawei signed four MoU with various Malaysian government bodies and an educational institution to expand co-operation across domains including scientific research, innovation, talent, smart campuses, and cyber security.
The vendor has also opened its OpenLab in Kuala Lumpur, to "serve as an open, flexible, and secure platform for joint innovation with local partners."
The MoUs were signed with the SME Corporation Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Terengganu State Government, and CyberSecurity Malaysia.
The agreements were signed at the third annual Huawei Asia-Pacific Innovation Day - co-hosted by Malaysia's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), and the Malaysia-China Business Council - in Kuala Lumpur.
Huawei will cooperate with CyberSecurity Malaysia, the national cyber security specialist and technical agency under MOSTI to "ensure an open and collaborative partnership on the matter of national cybersecurity between the two.”
The partnership will see the establishment of a “Steering Committee” that promises to meet twice a year to discuss issues among others related to the technical standards of cybersecurity, and the innovation of ICT technology, and approaches in identifying and managing potential threats. In addition, a joint taskforce from both parties will be created to execute all the tasks set up by the committee.
Based on the MoU, Huawei will work to support and develop local players of the cybersecurity industry through the Cyber Security Malaysia Collaborative Partner (CCP) program.
Huawei will share knowledge, systems and processes on security matters through training courses with local players. Huawei will also assist in promoting cybersecurity awareness at national and international level through CyberSecurity Malaysia’s awareness programs.
The state government of Terengganu and Huawei Malaysia have meanwhile agreed to jointly design the state’s digital transformation roadmap that aims to bring "latest digital technologies and ICT solutions to the state", with Huawei providing technical expertise and business support in implementing the transformation plan.
The plan will capitalize on four main ICT-enablers: Broadband infrastructure, Cloud infrastructure, Innovation, and Human capital.
The partnership will see the building of ICT infrastructure and data centers promoting faster and stable broadband connection with a wider range of coverage.
With this the state will be able to leverage Internet of Things (IoT) and the use of smart application platforms to implement digital solutions across vertical industries such as education, transportation, healthcare, retail, security, industrial factories, smart homes, energy grids and others.
This project will also include open sharing of ICT knowledge through a state wide training program in the hopes of driving socio-economic development.
Huawei and SME Corp signed an MoU to promote cooperation in areas of research, innovation and talent development for SMEs towards building the nation’s digital economy.
Both parties will work together to develop and implement initiatives designed to help boost digital transformation of SMEs as part of promoting a digital economy and stimulating greater economic growth across all industries.
As part of Huawei’s efforts to enable an innovative open platform, SMEs will be able to leverage its new OpenLab facilities and take advantage of Huawei's expertise and support in developing and exploring ICT solutions for industry-specific challenges. They will also be given training and access to tap into Huawei’s global presence preparing for the digital economy.
As part of the partnership, there will be joint collaboration on research papers for SMEs’ readiness for the digital economy, encompassing readiness towards eCommerce, challenges and opportunities in the ICT and digital age, talent development, policies and infrastructure support.
Finally, Huawei Malaysia and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) aim to establish the development of a Smart Campus initiative and industry driven programs.
The university has appointed Huawei as a technical and business advisor for Smart Campus strategies and best ICT practices. In this role, Huawei will design initiatives and training programmes to share its vast knowledge and expertise on the latest ICT industry trends to the local university’s personnel and students. In addition, Huawei will assist in tailoring a career-based development program for the students to equip them with the necessary skills to be able to compete in an emerging digital economy.
