Chinese vendor Huawei has announced plans to limit its activities in Iran, one month after denying supplying equipment to aid in web monitoring and censorship in the nation.
In a statement published on Friday, Huawei revealed it will no longer seek new customers in Iran, and will “voluntarily...limit its business activities with existing customers.”
The vendor said it had made the decision in light of “the increasingly complex situation in Iran,” and insisted that its business in the nation “has been in full compliance with all applicable laws and regulations including those of the UN, US and EU.”
Huawei last month vehemently rejected reports claiming that it supplies technology that can be used for news censorship and web monitoring in the country.
Huawei acknowledged supplying a news delivery platform to operator MTN Irancell, but said the platform has no such capabilities.
US-based lobby group United Against A Nuclear Iran had called on Huawei to immediately end its business in Iran due to the allegations, and had dismissed Huawei's denial as the “parsing [of] legalistic descriptions.”
