Higher sales in the US and demand for Android devices have helped boost HTC’s first quarter net profit 3.1% year on year.

The Taiwan smartphone firm announced a first quarter profit of NT$5.03 billion ($158.78 million) Tuesday on 19.4% higher revenues of NT$37.7 billion.

The company is the world’s fourth largest smartphone-maker, with 6% of the market, and has bet heavily on Android devices. It made the first Android device two years ago and was chosen by Google to develop its first phone, the Nexus.

“The strong business growth momentum was a result of effective brand execution,” HTC said.

In the quarter, major US cellcos – including Sprint and T-Mobile – also launched key HTC devices.

Sprint debuted the HTC EVO smartphone, its first Wimax-enabled device.

HTC launched its first BREW-enabled device, the HTC Smart, device in India and Taiwan last week priced at NT$7,900 ($250).
