HKT plans to roll out a 10Gbps fiber broadband service for residential and commercial customers.

The PCCW subsidiary plans to offer the service to all premises within its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) footprint, which currently covers around 80% of Hong Kong households.

The company's NETVIGATOR 10G PON service will initially be offered to certain customers in a pilot phase, and will be made more broadly available after a commercial launch during the third quarter.

“In line with our 'Building for Tomorrow, Today' promise, we are bringing this technological breakthrough to our customers as early as possible,” HKT group managing director Alex Arena said.

“As the first operator to introduce 10G service in Hong Kong, HKT also has the unique capability of offering this service to everyone under our FTTH footprint because of the investments that we have made in the past in building an extensive fiber-rich network to handle technological evolution.”

The cost of deploying 10G services will be contained within the operator's normal capex budget, he said.

HKT currently has around 504,000 FTTH customers, and Arena said “a considerable portion” of these are using 500Mbps or faster services.
