Hong Kong Broadband Networks (HKBN) offers the world’s best value consumer broadband, with each megabit priced below 3 cents.
A survey of the best-priced broadband markets also places a Singapore ISP in the top ten for the first time, with StarHub ranked seventh, according to broadband research firm Point Topic.
Japan’s KDDI is place second and China Tietong is listed sixth in the rankings, which are based on the purchasing power parity (PPP) cost of the first year of a broadband subscription.
HKBN’s bb Fibre Home 1000 offers 1Gbps to the home at a price of 2.8 cents per megabit, while FTTH AU-Hikari Mansion Giga comes in at 4.8 cents, Point Topic says.
All but one of the top ten tariffs were pure fiber or used a fiber hybrid.
Telefónica del Peru, where a megabit costs $209, offers the world’s most expensive broadband connection, followed by South Africa’s Sainet at $177.
“Prices are stabilizing in many markets around the world and overall in the last quarter there was an average increase globally,” said senior analyst Fiona Vanier.
“Even in relatively mature markets, like Singapore or Italy, there is room for improvement as the new tariffs from StarHub and Fastweb demonstrate.”
