Hutchison Global Communications Limited (HGC) has been granted permission to provide international data and voice services in Myanmar, a move which makes it the first foreign telco to tap the nation's newly liberalized telecom market.

In a statement on Friday HGC, the international fixed-line unit of Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings, said it will provide affordable international voice and data connectivity through co-operation with an authorized Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) representative.

These include international private leased circuit and MPLS-based IP-VPN data services. Additionally, HGC has established direct voice interconnection with MPT and is now authorized to terminate traffic into Myanmar, which is opening up its telecom market for significant foreign investment, as part of the government’s plan to reform the country’s telecom sector announced earlier this year.

“Liberalization has sparked increasing demand for Myanmar people to communicate internationally – and HGC is able to meet that demand by offering premium grade voice services,” the Hong Kong-based operator said.

HGC said it has a strong track record in Myanmar’s telecoms sector, beginning with provision of the nation’s first IP-VPN service in 2008. The company has also served as one of the country’s major Internet backbone service providers since 2007, and providing international voice services to Myanmar under bilateral voice agreements over the years.
