HGC GlobalCentre has opened a new 110,000 square foot data center in Kwai Chung, Hong Kong and plans to use the facility to offer enterprise services including server colocation and data recovery.

HGC GlobalCentre is a joint venture between Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings (HTHKH) and multinational conglomerate Cheung Kong.

The JV's new Kwai Chung facility was designed according to tier-III grade standards and has ISO 27001 operational security certification. It is overseen by a 24/7 network operations center and building management system monitoring.

The data center is HGC GlobalCentre's second in Hong Kong. The first is in Wong Chuk Hang, around 20km away. The company said this makes the facilities ideally located as primary and back-up sites. Sister company Hutchison GlobalCentre also operates its own data center at Shatin.

The facilities link to a 100G Ethernet network provided by HTHKH's fixed-line business Hutchison Global Communications.

Operating together, the three facilities provide services to customers including financial institutions, cloud service providers and multinational corporations.

HTHKH COO Jennifer Tan said the Kwang Chung facility has significantly augmented the company's data center capacity.

“Following inauguration of the Kwai Chung data center, the total capacity of our facilities [including the Shatin DC] has increased by 60% in terms of number of cabinets, while gross floor space expanded by 40%,” she said.
