Hong Kong-based fixed line telco Hutchison Global Communications (HGC) recently two IaaS public cloud services serving both large enterprises and small and medium businesses (SMBs) in Hong Kong.

Dubbed enterprizCloud and bizCloud, the two IaaS are back by HGC's network connection (HGC's ROADM-based 100G optical backbone network), and were built on top of CA Technologies' AppLogic cloud platform.

Targeted at large enterprises, HGC enterprizCloud is a public cloud IaaS that adopts the layer 2 network architecture (instead of the commonly adopted "layer 3 network architecture". Accordingly, HGC can enable flexible set up of "hardware-based networking," including VLAN, firewall and VPN, to achieve specialized IaaS usage by different departments within an end user's company. Using CA AppLogic's GUI, a web-based interface, HGC's end user customers can now scale computing resources like storage up or down within just 20 to 30 minutes. HGC's bizCloud is an SMB-class public cloud IaaS that is offered at a "more competitive pricing model."

Eric Chan, head of products and services, Hutchison Global Communication, said HGC's vision is "to offer out-of-the-box IT solutions" that ride on enterprizCloud and bizCloud. Specifically, HGC will plan to provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 applications, using the templates provided by enterprizCloud and bizCloud. "Examples of such Tier 2 and Tier 3 applications for SMB use are web presence, ERP, accounting applications, with security and firewall protection," he added.

Innovation pool and quick capacity expansion

HGC evaluated three solutions from different vendors before deciding on CA AppLogic cloud platform. Commenting on why H3C selected CA Technologies,' Chan said he was impressed with CA's online marketplace, called Cloud Commons, which "already has a lot of cloud applications partners." "Through CA, we hope to tap into that innovation pool to provide a wide range of SaaS targeting different business needs," Chan said.
