The buildout of the Hawaiki cable system continues to march along. Yesterday morning the project achieved a key milestone, landing the cable in Pacific City, Oregon in the US.
In September, TE Subcom's CS Global Sentinel took 8,300km of cable and headed for the US west coast via the Panama Canal.
Now, with the landing in Oregon completed, they have turned southwest to lay cable toward Hawaii and American Samoa -- first burying it on the continental shelf and then laying it in deep water.
The other end of the cable is being laid by the other ship, CS Responder. When complete, Hawaiki will finally add another path between the west coast of the US and Australia/New Zealand.
The cable will stretch more than 15,000km in all and will boast a potential capacity of over 42Tbps.
